Basically, I’m on holiday this week. I realize also that last week’s column kind of read like I was “phoning it in” a bit too, but you know what it’s like when you are about to go on holiday, you find yourself saying things like:
“I’m not gonna get those spread sheets done I’m afraid”
“That stock take isn’t really necessary is it?”
“Does this guy REALLY need surgery?”
“I don’t own any Rihanna”
And so on. Look, I deserve a break, I’ve been stood in the corner of that bar pressing the play button up to 20 times an hour for 4 hours at a time, sometimes 4 times a week for months now, jesus. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. So I’m off up to Marske (drive towards Middlesborough until it starts looking like a scene out af a low budget “Terminator” film then keep going towards the sea until it looks nice again) for a day, then down watch England play San Marino at Wembly stadium. So if you watch the game you might see me on TV in a change from my usual role of “police would like to question…”
So that’s what I am up to, what are you doing? You should try any of the following: Montey’s Bar has a rare gig, with Citizen Smith playing there on Friday. I’ve never actually been to a gig at Montey’s but I know a lot of cool people who have and they say it is a sweet venue. As well as their trademark cocktails, these days they’ve expanded their beers too so plenty of good drinking options. There is a fair few gigs on Friday actually, BWMC on Skipton road have live music from Lucky boy Brown and The Soul Searchers at one end of the spectrum for good soulful music, whilst at the other, Viper Rooms have Aqua live. Erm… Aqua actually had more than one hit, though the ones you’ll remember were much of a muchness – they DID do a ballad however, and that was a good song, but lets face it, you are going for “Barbie Girl” ain’t ya? Given that “guilty pleasure” is very much in at the moment, it doesn’t get much more guilty than that. I bet this will actually be banging, Vipers does get some decent fun acts on, so is probably worth the queuing. Also on Friday The Den has “Gafternick & Guests” live, they are having some good nights down there at the moment – Elliot Long is playing there on Saturday too.
On Sunday as best as I can work out, Strangers in Paradise are playing twice at the Blues Bar, which seems bizarre but I have heard so many good things about them that it doesn’t seem unlikely. Interestingly, and in an entirely glued in aside, Strangers in Paradise are actually playing my Hallowe’en Zombie Disco night at Rehab on Sunday 26th October. That’s Bottom of the Bottle, the metal night I run… whilst Strangers in Paradise are not exactly a metal band, I’m trying to diversify the type of bands we have on, so that night there is indie, alternative rock, pop punk, metal and straight up British Rock n’ Roll. That date again: Sunday 26th October (hey, whilst I’m telling you about it I may as well let you know Budwiser is £2.50 all night too. In for a penny, in for £2.50).
Here are the full listings, unless I’ve missed something out, which I probably will have because no one talks to me these days. But anyway, I don’t care, I’M ON HOLIDAY!.
