I haven’t got much to say this week really. It has long been my Dj motto of “if you’ve got nothing to say, say nothing” so to be honest, I think I should just give you this week’s listings.
Still….
I suppose I COULD tell you I am running my monthly quiz at the Den this evening, but if I were to only mention that and not tell you about some other things that are on, you would be permitted to suspect that this column, for this week at least, was nothing more than a flimsy piece of self promotion. I personally hold my well earned reputation of integrity and fairness much dearer to me than that, so what I shall in fact tell you to do is go to Sean “The Bear” McGrath’s pub quiz that is on tonight at Christies, it’s much better than mine and is on every week. I mean, it IS on every week, so you could go to it, well, any week really. If there were a quiz on that was say, only monthly, then naturally you would not want to miss that would you, but Sean’s quiz is every week so no worries there.
I want to briefly mention what a couple of excellent nights I had at The Blues Bar last Thursday and Tuesday just gone respectively. On Tuesday they had a band called Hey Moonshaker playing who do beatbox lead blues; it was fun and really well done, tunes wise wasn’t really up my street however the support act were called Prose who come from Leeds and were just excellent and really were my kind of thing. They do acoustic driven grime, along the lines of early Plan B (one of those artists who I make myself sound like a tw(un)t about because I say “I prefer his earlier stuff”) and they were really awesome. It was packed down there and the atmosphere was great for all the acts. I also finally got to see rapper Lence who seemingly everyone knows, and he’s “got skillz” (to people outside of the world of Hip-Hop and street parlance that means he’s really rather good) and all in all it was a decent night out; before that, last Thursday I went to see The Memphis Cruisers and had an absolute stormer! The Memphis Crusiers play the rolling Thursday residency and as such are back there again on Thursday 27th November, which I already have in my diary as my last big party night before the nitty gritty work rubbish of Christmastide kicks in. The do Rockabilly and do it really well, and when some of the crowd got up to swing dance along to it, it made it even better. Can’t wait to go see them at the end of Novermber there and I am hoping to drag some of my friends down too, so if you are a friend of mine (unlikely) and you are reading this (even more unlikely) then Thuursday 27th November is a night you’ll need to have an excuse to avoid me ready for..
I’m not doing too bad to say I’ve not really got anything to say this week, and I’m gonna get some help now from a mate of mine called Andy, (I don’t suppose his name matters in the context but I want to make you think that I am important because I know people, and have friends) who is launching a magazine. Called The Modified Mind, it will be a printed zine reviewing the albums and MixTapes from Harrogate and North Yorkshire that would not necessarily get press coverage. Andy says “The albums I review will be reviewed in the physical zine and any mix tapes I am pointed towards will be embedded and reviewed on the site – www.themodifiedmind.com/. I figure you should horde anything you can’t download – the ‘zine will be something you can hold in you hands…. So, what music am I after – all of it I guess! As long as it has some relevance to Harrogate ….. yup, I will review it. Whether you are a record label based in this town, a solo artist giving their music away for free or an up and coming producer – there is a place for your music in The Modified Mind”.
Sounds kind of interesting doesn’t it? So I reckon if you are a band, singer or even Dj (do those even still exist anymore?) you can click the link above or can find the Modified Mind on Facebook at – https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Modified-Mind/534891209988247
