To celebrate National Older People’s Day on Wednesday 1 October 2014, Harrogate Borough Council’s Fit 4 Fun Team, Age UK and Ripon Leisure Centre will be holding a variety of physical activity taster sessions at Ripon Leisure Centre.
The national event, which coincides with the UN International Day of Older Persons, recognises and celebrates the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society.
The theme for the day will be ‘active ageing’ and the fun will begin at 2pm. Information will be available offering advice and support on how to lead a healthy lifestyle, and details on social groups in the area and fitness classes. There will also be the opportunity to take part in a range of fitness classes suitable for all abilities and to receive a free health check.
The afternoon event will finish with a ‘Walking for Health’ stroll to Ripon Cathedral to join in a special Evensong Service to celebrate older people and their skills, contributions and experience.
Councillor Pat Jones, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Sports said: There are over 11 million people in the UK who are over 65 years old and that number is steadily growing. It is important that the achievements and contributions of older people are recognised and celebrated, and national Older People’s Day is a fantastic way of doing this.
Physical exercise is important and the event at Ripon Leisure Centre will provide a whole range of activities to consider. So whether it is a gentle seated exercise class or a Zumba Gold class, we are inviting older people to come along, bring a friend or meet new ones, and have a go.
We will also be holding exercise taster sessions on Monday 6th October from 2pm at St Paul’s Church on Victoria Avenue in Harrogate in conjunction with the Harrogate Easier Living Project, which provides support for older or vulnerable people and those with a disability to remain independent in their own home.
Please contact Natalie Smith, Harrogate Borough Council’s Senior Activity Ranger on 01423 500600 ext. 58382 or 07525 988160 for further details and to book you place.
