Firstly, apologies for the fact this is exactly one day late.
I’ve been involved in some pretty top level meetings this week about my career (including meetings to decide exactly WHICH smelly old waistcoat I wear, AND whether or not I should dye my hair dark again – important stuff I’m sure you’ll agree) so I’ve had to fit writing this around that. Given that however unlikely it seems, I actually get paid for DJing, I had to give that priority; there are a few changes to my work schedule coming up that will, ultimately, work in your favor as they will mean I am doing less DJing in Harrogate, so it’s all for the greater good.
That said, since it is bank Holiday Weekend pretty much all bets are off anyway. There are loads of things on, but the full listings section is guess work in that in a lot of cases some venues push their Saturday night line ups to Sundays, and others really go at it for a big full weekend of stuff. All I can confidently tell you about are the listings for where I’m working, which is nice as basically talking about myself is my favorite thing to do right after doing one-armed wrestling with myself… and I’ve not even had time to fit that in.
But before I get to talking about myself, there are plenty of special one off gigs this weekend, such as tonight at The Den they have The Barflies playing live. I’ve not seen The Barflies but they are certainly living up to their name as they seem to be really getting around, and The Den has put on some good gigs there, so it all adds up. Onto Saturday there in the afternoon there is an acoustic set from Hayley Gaftarnick at 5pm whist things take a distinctly South American twist with the return of their “Latin Fever” night hosted by the lovely Ula-la & FERNANDO who are always READY for a fun romp into the evening!
Viper Rooms has got 90’s boy band 5ive (5? F.I.V.E.) playing there this evening (Friday) but there only seems to be two of them still doing it. I’m not sure really how that will work but 5ive did have some ace pop hits and were definitely the best boy bands from that era if you ask me, so I reckon that will be a slamdunkthefunk night that will make everybody get up when the lights go down and so on.
For a bit of pubbing action get to The Emptresson the Stray on Bank Holiday Sunday as they have a BBQ during the day there, which is a great way to line your stomach for an extended Sunday night session which will hopefully include the following:
On Sunday night I’ve got a Bank Holiday Bottom of the Bottle special, with 4 bands playing live from 9pm. PIPS headline who won the Battle of the Bands earlier in the year, and support comes from 2 bands from Leeds; Slaughter Throne who do Heavy Ass Black metal, and Euthemia who do anthemic alternative Rock. Alonzy really impressed the crowd at the last gig I put on and are opening things up once again at 9pm with their lovely female fronted Rock sound. Entry is free, and if you ain’t into rock, downstairs the Rehab Residents are playing Commercial dance and all the big hits and entry for that is free too!
Onto Monday then and the Roundtables Soapbox derby takes place at The Valley Gardens. I know a bunch of people taking part in this and any excuse to go to the Valley Gardens is a good thing, but as I mentioned I’m really busy and feel like I’ve already been on my soapbox too long so Ima just give you the listings in full for you to work out for yourselves how to spend the long weekend. Have lots of fun y’all!
