The mayor of Harrogate, Cllr Jim Clark has unveiled a commemorative Tour de France mosaic at the Fairfax Community Centre in Harrogate – 20 June 2014
The Centre worked with local artist Sue Kershaw and local schools to replace the mosaic in the entrance with one depicting cycling through time with the Tour de France logo.
The mosaic was made by Year 5 / 6 pupils from Willow Tree and Hookstone Chase Community Primary, along with 8-12 year old children from the Friday Night Fever youth club at the Fairfax Community Centre.
It has 4 main sections, with the schools using their schools colours. Willow Tree completed the green section and Hookstone the red section – each school having the mosaic for 2 days. The Friday youth club took the blue section and they all contributed to the remaining section.
The project was funded through a grant of £1500 from the Borough Councils Community Chest and £500 from the Fairfax Management Committee.
Sue Kershaw said: Mosaics are a great way to bring people together. There are lots of parts and its about bringing a community together through art and creativity.
