Dirty Stops Out – Dj Trev’s week’s weekly guide to places to go to where you can drink that magic liquid that makes you be more interesting; so interesting in fact that you have to talk louder. NB: For best results go to these places WITH someone, as talking loudly to yourself appears weird.
Last week I plugged a charity gig for the http://leighnaylor.co.uk/ fund, and said I was going to go there and donate 5 (F.I.V.E.) pounds. But then I forgot, and now feel like a fraud. So listen, I’m going to go do that now….
(I’m leaving a gap here, to indicate me going upstairs to ring my bank. But I’m having to write “I’m leaving a gap here” because the editor of Harrogate news usually edits out unnecessary things. Which is bad as the bulk of my articles are unnecessary).
There. There is only one thing that feels better than giving, and that is giving and telling everyone about it. Don’t take it away from me, I get very little else out of writing this column, since the people who used to tell me they like it have either all stopped reading it, or now think it’s rubbish. I’m with them on the latter, but regrettably can’t do the former. Let’s just get through this shall we?
Anyway, I’ve donated some money now, and invite you to do a sponsored event: If you manage to read the entirety of this article without skimming over any of it, when you get to the end reward yourself by giving 5 pounds to charity. It’s called a sponsored bawk, and I confidently expect it to raise several pounds and even more eyebrows in exasperation.
I also gave a plug to my mate Kyle’s charity challenge thing, that is on the facebook at facebook.com/teamstarpower. I’m not going to plug it again, but you can have a look for yourself by, erm, looking yourself at that page. I can’t take you by the hand through everything.
I can however give you a vague and mis-informed guide to what is on this weekend, and here are some of the stand out / outstanding things that are on. You’ll notice a pleasant lack of hundreds of things involving me this week, as whilst I’ve got lots on, the only things that are really outstanding are the invoices I’ve sent to the places I work.
The Den has got two lots of live music there this weekend. On Friday Poor Boy do Chicago style blues in the evening, whilst on Saturday afternoon the lovely Dan Burnette is there. Apparently they have a new menu, but I’ve not had chance to try it yet. I’m off in to eat there this weekend so will probably let you know what it’s like next week, unless they have taken their Prawn and Avocado salad off, in which case I will be too busy burning all the cities of Europe in my ire.
On Saturday at the recently refurbed Retro Bar, there is live music from Selby Green. I think they are residents there, but they also have a ginger haired / bald paradox of a person Djing there from time to time, who I suspect is a good dj as he is a good person and that’s how Djing works. Those of you who know me know this to be true, as I am a very very bad person.
If you’d like to prove this theorem you can come and check me out as I start my new Saturday night thing at Rehab this week. Your Dj Pieman is indeed moving to America (a place I can’t see him enjoying frankly, as I’ve heard its all loud people and extra large food servings – who would want that?) so I am taking over the top floor every week. Ostensibly this is my night Bottom of the Bottle, going weekly. However there is a fair bit more to it than that, as I’m involving a load of local bands and prooters. As I can’t be arsed to do all the work myself. This week I’ve got Home Fire Studios putting on a showcase night from 8pm with 3 live bands, including the long standing kings of the North Yorkshire Hardcore, F*%k With Fire, supported by Clean Shirts and Hung. Entry is free and after the bands I play Rock and Growl til 4am.
On to Sunday, Bilton Working Men’s Club have got an Elton John tribute act on. Unfortunately I cannot think about any Elton John jokes that are appropriate. If however you would like the inappropriate, follow me on the facebook.com/djtrev as I really wind some people up on there.
Like, REALLY.
I was bemoaning the fact I couldn’t find any Harrogate Town or Harrogate Railway fixtures last week, it has since dawned on me that that is because their seasons have finished. Perhaps only starting to list football fixtures at the end of April was a mistake on my part, in hindsight. Still, they do got some things over the summer, for example Harrogate Town are running a Sports Camp there for kids on the 27th to the 29th of May. Having myself been a kid once, I can confirm these types of thing are brilliant. I went to loads of them in Knaresborough and frequently won awards such as “most attendances” or “Award for doing the best he can”.
Doing the best he can in Journalism: Ripon Watch
In the process of researching this article (I use the term research in the loosest sense possible) I jot down things that are on that I have read about. I’ve got written that on the 9th somewhere in Ripon Pseudonympho are live. This is followed immediately by the words “Craft Fair”. I guess I accidentally combined two items, as the concept of Pseudonympho playing a craft fair seems unlikely at best. However, who knows. It amuses me more to leave it as that, than actually find out what and where they really are playing.
I would go on, but I’m currently having a massive row with someone on facebook as they are saying that I am purile, stupid and offensive, whilst I think I am purile, stupid, offensive AND short. So here are this weeks full listings:

The exact same bit of SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION I used the week before last week AND the week before AND aaaaand the week before that. Pretty much since the dawn of time actually. Let’s face it, you’ve stopped reading already. I mean, I’ve said “you’ve stopped reading already haven’t you” and not one person has said “yes”. Fine, whatever, NANANANANANA I’m not listening to you either.
Should you wish to listen to some of my actual Dj’ing from the comfort of your own home, you can do that at Mixcloud.com/djtrevuk but really I’d much rather you can out and partied, not for my financial gain you understand, but for your emotional wellbeing.
Thanks for reading, drink responsibly and don’t be loose with your affections.
