Dj Trev’s guide to the March Hare of the Dog and April, Fools. Plus how to to put a spring in your step, you mothers.
It’s Mothering Sunday on, um, Sunday obviously, so if you are lucky enough to have a mother let her know that you know that you are lucky. I would personally like to abuse my journalistic power and use this article to give mad props to my mum ( for those that don’t know, mad props means massive respec’ inna place) however my mum doesn’t read this page because, like many of you, she thinks it’s boring. Nevertheless I will still use my platform to state proudly and publicly how much I love my mum, cos my dad DOES read this and I know he kind of passes on a distilled version to my mum so she’ll get the message. Whilst I’m on I love my dad too and he DOES like my output, so if you were thinking “wow his mum doesn’t even like his writing, it’s not just me” my mum does think I’m the handsomest boy ever and that I was brilliant in Meadowside School’s production of “The Wind in the Willows”, so really she is largely onside with the winning team here, so i’ll let her off. You however, with your straight up hateration, have made a powerful enemy this day. Unless you are thinking : “why does he always go on about people who don’t like his writing? I think he is a literary genius and also smells just great”, in which case there is a comment box at the bottom of this page for such fair and even handed feedback.
This weekend has the Roundtables Beer Festival at The Crown hotel. Tonight has Isi Dee, Rob Reynolds, The Dan Burnette Band, Rob Donnely and Vibe Town across two stages. Listen, I could list ALL the acts that are playing over the weekend, plus mention that there is also a more straight forward “drinking lounge” for people who don’t fancy live music, but frankly they’ve got a website http://www.harrogatebeerfestival.co.uk that tells you all that, and since they will persist on running these events on a weekend when “hard” working Dj’s like myself cannot possibly go, I don’t want to indulge them. Every year I have to listen to people telling me how awesome it all is, and lament the fact that I still have to work for a living rather than just being able to go to these kind of things that are totally up my street, if I want to continue living up my street, rather than in a box. It’s on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and always gets rave reviews.
I’ve started going in to Major Tom’s midweek as they have really good beer and scrabble, which is for me next to godliness. I notice they have a bunch of events there but I don’t know what they are, as when I asked them to send me a list of them I got told “you can find them all out on facebook” which, whilst I admit is true, kind of makes me think I can just tell you to do that, and cut out the middle man. If you want to find out what is on, look on facebook ok? If actually you do want to go on facebook I’m on there, www.facebook.com/djtrev and should you fancy sending me some listings you can do it that way. For example, to see how that works: Retro Bar sent me a bunch of listings, and as you can imagine that makes things loads easier for me, so lets compare the two: Retro Bar has the following things on : DJ Dave (the legendary Ginger) is there this Saturday doing “Electric Dreams” which is 80s tunes and 90s dance anthems. Major Tom’s possibly has something on but you can look at facebook to find out. At Retro Bar Selby Green will be starting a residency there from the 12th April. There is probably something on at Major Tom’s then too, but you can look at facebook to find out. Also Retro Bar are planning to start a Northern soul night there, and whilst details are sketchy about that at the moment, I still found finding out about it from them nicer than getting told to simply look at facebook for what Major Tom’s might be doing. Seriously though, there is a bunch of stuff on a Major Tom’s but I couldn’t make head nor tail of it as I had been drinking at the time, and thus may have acted a bit like a diva when I got told to look at facebook to find out what is going on. And Retro Bar has had a refit, so go and check that out too.
Since I came off as sounding a bit “do you know who I am” in that last paragraph (and since I don’t even know who I am) I will end on a nice high point by plugging a charity jumble sale, so you will think I am a better person than I in fact am. Ependymoma Research are holding a Jumble Sale at St. Luke’s Church, on Franklyn Square this Saturday, go to it and buy things.
Finally Tuesday is Free Beer night at every pub in town, simply present a print out of this page and say “it’s the 1st of April and I hereby claim what ever is coming to me” (please note at some pubs you may have to wait outside for an unspecified amount of time to allow them to suitably prepare the bar, just follow the nice bartenders instructions. they may also ask you to do a “Fur Cough” for research.)
