Long term fans of this page (it’s quite an exclusive group: my Dad likes it, but my Mum doesn’t, for example) will already know this, but this issue marks our first anniversary of publication. I can’t believe I’ve sat down once a week in front of my computer and put out something more tangible that 10cc’s, but I managed. It has been a turbulent 12 months of high’s and lows, up’s and down’s, inaccuracies’ and poor punctuation’s.
Here are some statistics involving my fondest and least fondest memories of writing this column (it’s not a long list because A) I’m a very busy man and 2) I can’t remember getting up this morning so can harldy be expected to remember things that happened up to 12 months ago) :
19. The number of pints I have been bought by people who have said they like my writing.
12. the number of Jagerboms I have been bought for the same reason.
45. The number of minutes I got cornered for on just one night out by 2 people who wanted to tell me, at length, that they don’t enjoy my work (though, in fairness they COULD have meant my DJ’ing, as that is of a pretty poor standard too).
1. The number of otherwise pleasant trips to the toilet I’ve had spoiled by getting told my writing is boring. For the record, I didn’t go into the toilet and announce “hey, has anyone got any criticisms they would like to level at me, because I am fascinated to hear them, starting from… NOW”.
50. the amount of otherwise crappy days that I’ve had cheered up by people saying that they actually DO like reading what I write.
Looking at these figures, I can see it’s definitely worth carrying on doing, if only for myself. Seriously, them 50 days where I got cheered up would otherwise have been spent punching walls, and even the times people slagged me off it distracted me from my otherwise overwhelming crippling emotional pain. Honestly, without being all drippy and emo it really is nice to get told I don’t suck. However, if you think I DO suck don’t let the fact other people disagree stop you from coming over to me whilst I am minding my own business, and going on and on about how you would do it if you were me. Because I truly feel that it is equally as important to put empty negativity into the world, as it is for people to just be nice to each other. Also, I really don’t mind a good slagging, cos if you don’t like my writing, it’s probably because you don’t understand the long words – don’t be afraid to ask me to condescend to you and explain them. Condescend means talk down to.
To kick things off this week now that I’ve eventually stopped talking about myself (don’t worry Trev fans, I’ll be back on topic in 2 paragraphs) this Saturday in Leeds there is a night called Remedy at The Beaver Works. You may be wondering why the deuce I am talking about a thing in Leeds when this is a Harrogate What’s-on device, but Rememdy is run by Harrogate DJ’s and production teams, and I would specifically recommend it for anyone who goes to, or used to go to, The Fire nights that have been going on since the days of yore at Bar Med. It’s kind of a Hippy Dance night with lots of high energy music, and the line up this month is headlined by Mark EG, who is a quality Dj at the Hard end of Dance music. I might even be there early doors, but don’t let that put you off, I’m not DJing, I’ll just be hanging around trying to work out how it’s done.
Closer to home, Dan Burnette – or as people who have befriended him on the facebook know him: Dan Burnutter – is playing an afternoon/evening set at The Den this Saturday. I heard him there a few weeks ago and he does a nice range of tunes with some quirky details; like, he played the theme tune to Inspector Gadget at the end of one of his songs. I don’t know why but it was well good.
Right, back to me: I started a Battle of the Bands last Sunday (about the same time as this column, what I had written and submitted on Thursday got posted, rendering the first Three Seventh’s of it pointless, but really, that hardly registered on the scale of “why do I even bother”) and the first heat of the Battle went really well. Like, REALLY well. Not the kind of “really well” that a promoter says about a gig when it was just kind of ok and they are hoping that by lying on Facebook about it it will get busier, but “really well” in that it was genuinely a good gig. Should you like to read about it, I did post a review of it, facebook.com/djtrevuk but I must warn you, unlike my usual output on facebook it contains no lies. The Battle recommences this Sunday at Rehab. This week it is the Bottom of the Bottle heat, which means it features heavier bands and is followed by a Rock & Metal club night afterwards. Playing from 8pm are Day Old Hate, Iced Out, I Call Mutiny and Red Ocean Nectar, and set times will be drawn on the night to ensue fairness. Entry for this is £3, but due to the unique way Bottom of the Bottle is funded (by you, essentially, via that there door charge) you can easily claw that back on the drinks offers on the night. Hopefully I’ll see you there?
Before I get to this week’s full listings, a quick reminder if your event doesn’t feature here, it’s not out of spite (or even the more specious reasoning that I only really list my own events) it is because I don’t know about it. If you want me to list something you are doing drop me a message on the facebook.com/djtrev and I surely will. Which reminds me, Harrogate Noise have started doing a podcast that you can listen to by clicking here https://m.soundcloud.com/harrogate-noise/podcast-0-introductions-pips it’s about the live music scene in these parts and I’m just listening to it now for the first time, so beware there might be some swearing and that in it, but anyway swear words are some of my favorites and what I’ve heard so far is pretty funny and pleasingly the music quality is really high, so give it a listen.
