Dj Trev’s guide to what to do when you are Feb up

21 February 2014

Praise the makers of the Gregorian calendar! The depressing wet freeze yawnfest that is February is nearly over!

I don’t know if I read this somewhere – but is it true that people who are born in February are technically accursed evil spawn of the damned? Thinking about it my old exes birthday was in a month that began with M, I can’t remember which one, so maybe I just made that fact up.

Anyway, February is nearly over, the Spring equinox is getting to be more than just a blurry idea of warmth on the horizon and things are going to start looking up!

Already good things are afoot: This Friday see’s the return of Henshaw’s Arts and Crafts Centre’s “Friday Night Mix” – and fair play to them, they are setting out their stall with an excellent line up. Set Sails headline, who are like an awesome 90‘s grunge band but with a really hot lead singer. Support comes from Pips who are like an awesome early Red Hot Chillie Peppers but with a bizarre Brian Blessed voiced maniac lead singer. Also playing are Red Ocean Nectar, but I don’t really know them well enough to make any sexual suggestive / Brian Blessed remarks about them.. And there is an acoustic support. Fine. All proceeds from these nights go to the Henshaws society for the Blind and it is a great venue; they have a bar with liquors to drunken you and I think they do food when gigs are on too, but I’m not Dietitian so don’t take my word for that. Or indeed anything. Apart from that Hannah out of Set Sails is fit. That has the Cast Iron Dj Trev guarantee.

Speaking of fit, on Sunday there is a fun/fit/dance thing on called Zumbalicious. It’s ran by “Zumba with Ula” who is another fit woman I know (such is life) and for the uninitiated Zumba is a South American dance style, to crazy latin rhythms that you dance to lead by an instructor (indeed they have like 5 on the night so it keeps things interesting AND very energetic) and it always looks like a right good laugh. Regrettably I am not able to dance, as, as anyone who has seen me dance in Moko at 4.30am will know, I dance SO good that sometimes I make the world spin in the wrong direction and cause gay marriages and other things that the silly-bobs in UKIP think are natural disasters.

Into the future and NEXT week on Sunday Harrogate’s Battle of the Bands starts at Rehab. To be honest, if you read my output (facebook.com/djtrev etc) and are not already heartily sick of hearing about it, you probably will be by then, so instead I’m gonna talk about something that is on in Leeds in a few weeks.

I don’t usually cover Leeds stuff because, well, the website IS called Harrogate-news and Leeds has just plenty of those things. However this event has got some Harrogate DJ’s and promoters involved and I’ve worked with several of them and they are really cool. Indeed, if I wasn’t working in Leeds myself on Friday 8th March I would be going to REMEDY – Out of the Darkness. It’s at a place called the Beaverworks but the guys who put it on put so much effort into the decor of the night that the venue is largely irrelevant as the place gets completely transformed. Bam is playing in the hard techno room and I’ve DJ’ed with him before, he is a really good dj riding close to the hardcore /Hard Dance style, and headlining that room is a guy called Mark EG who has been a big name in the harder styles of dance music for a long time… I seem to recall seeing him at the Doncaster Warehouse when I was 18 but I may have been smoking banana skins at the time so that might not have happened. There are 4 different

rooms of dance music, including live bands and they go for the whole “festival vibe” with live fire performers and chill out lounges and all sorts of psychedelic idyllics. Definitely one for the harder dance crew, I reckon Remedy is worth the trip.

Also next month and further afield even than Leeds… Asomvel, Harrogate’s answer to Anvil, are supporting another great band called Grand Magus. They are most of their UK dates on the European tour: 12th March in Manchester, the 13th at the Voodoo Lounge in Dublin (Ok I realize I’m pushing it listing THAT on a Harrogate News website) and the 14th March in Wolverhampton. Grand Magus are an excellent Power Metal outfit. Asomvel, who many of you may just remember for having that big black weird TRUCK OF METAL that used to be parked up on Skipton road before Dj Pieman took it and drove it to Neverland (that is how I remember it going down, Banana skins again probably) are a great band who eat sleep and bleed Metal. It is quite quite traditional, when talking about them, to mention that they sound a bit like Motorhead, so I won’t bother, but this really looks like a good tour for headbangers and long haired muthers alike.

I feel I’ve written plenty for this week because, well, to be honest, I’m still in a bit of a mood with all of you as I didn’t get one, NOT ONE, Valentines Card. If you feel sufficiently bad about that, I would like to remind you that I play every Thursday at Lure Bar doing my “comedy” pub quiz, this Saturday I’m at the Den and Every Sunday I’m at Rehab too, and that wearable X-Wing helmets are available on Ebay from as little as £80 (plus postage and packaging).
