This week is one of my favourite weeks to write about. Not because there is anything in particular on that I like – there IS, but we’ll get to that in a bit – but because when it gets to the actual listings part of this page and I’m updating it, this is the one week of the month where I don’t have to change the surfix’s on the date. IE: from last week’s 7th February to this weeks 13th I only have to change the two numbers, not the “th” bit. Imagine the time I’m saving!! I know this seems like a small thing, but when you are a person like me you have to make do with small things to make you and indeed others around you, happy. However, I’ve just invested all the time I saved by having a grand total of 14 letters less to change on this column by telling you about it at great length. Well, easy come easy go. And as anyone will tell you, I am really easy come.
This Friday is Valentines day which, if you are a “big time successful dj” ,usually means crushing disappointment as you realise that actually NO ONE knows your name or thinks you are fit. The growing sense of discomfort increases as you go onto every dj stand you work on, casually – desperately – looking for any kind of valentines card. Usually the night ends with a pathetic cry of gratitude when a drunk member of bar staff writes one out on a napkin for you, just so that you stop playing Radiohead records mixed with The Human League’s “Don’t you want me”.
If you are one of those people who chooses to hate Valentines day, there are plenty of things on to take your mind off it. Likewise if you are one of those couples who chooses to make everyone else hate valentines day, there are plenty of options for where you can go for your nauseating public displays of affection. But try keep it above the navel ok?
The Geek Pub Quiz is at retro bar this Friday for some Valentines geekery, and if you are in Ripon it’s actually on tonight (Thursday) too, at The Curzon, as The Geek pub quiz continues to take over the planet. Well, they did say the Geek shall inherit the earth. Or was it the Greek? I couldn’t hear.
On Saturday The Groves Pub in Knaresborough has got live music from Liam Grey, Liam is really good and is suitable for both the loved up and people who are in the dog house for forgetting about V-day….
In other news, on Tuesday at the Blues Bar Matt Evens Band is playing. Now please note that that is EVENS not EVANS, EVENS… imagine how annoyed he is for not being called Steven, cos if Mr. Even’s band was made up of other men all called Steven, or even Stephen, then his band name could have been something like, erm, The Early November Fall Whilst My guitar Gently Weepz Bizcuit or something really hip like that.
If you fancy seeing me, I’m at Lure Bar tonight with my Pre-Valentines Antidate (antiDATE, I’m particularly proud of that one) pub quiz, I’m in Leeds Electric Press on Friday and back in my old stomping ground of Driffield on Saturday then down the ol’ Rehab on Sunday. I still need to find time to get into Major Tom’s too…
And cos I realise that this is a bit of a brief one, here is a link to a review I did of a gig this week just gone, https://www.harrogate-news.co.uk/2014/02/12/dj-trev-reviews-jason-feddy-blues-bar/ and very good it was too (the gig, not writing in the review, as you will no doubt see if you can be bothered to read it)
