Dj Trev’s guide to Christmas warm up winter Warmers. Plus other warmers that he likes. Like Leg Warmers.
CHRISTMAS FAIR WATCH
Following last week’s “Spaghetti Wrestling” antics, our sporting mascots The Spa Town Roller Derby girls are at it again, this week with their Christmas Fair at Christchurch, on Saturday the 7th. It starts at 10am. This is a somewhat more family orientated event and you should go there and check out their buns.
OTHER BUSINESS
The Alexandra Pub always has live music every Sunday organised by Tom, who is a top man (like, a man who is really good, not a shop that is basically Burton’s Menswear, that would be weird) but normally they only announce who is playing after this column goes to press; however this week I know who is on so go there and check out live music with Rob Reynolds and Samantha Smith. And try the Daleside Blonde, as I’ve not mentioned Daleside Blonde for a while.
I’ve been having a nice chat to Neil Jaques, who is the only Dj who works in Harrogate who is more qualified than me for the word “Legendary” to appear in the same sentence (Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting I’m actually “Legendary”, that word is just generally used when referring to any Dj who is over the age of 23). He plays at Vipers every Saturday with Angel Lee. I’m not sure if Angel Lee is legendary, but if I’m any judge of people on their names I imagine she’s very attractive. That said, when I first heard the name Neil Jaques I pictured a French Man riding a bike with some records over one shoulder and a string of onions around his neck, but Neil looks nothing like that and is from Rotherham. Still, he’s a good upfront house dj and a thoroughly decent chap so go see him at Vipers and let me know if Angel Lee is as fit as she sounds.
Dan Burnett is playing at The Den this Friday. I’ve not seen him for a while so I’m not sure if he’s still got his “Ricky Gervais” beard thing, or maybe he turned it into a dashing “Magnum PI” mustache for November like lots of people did? However, he really is very good live so go see him. And Oh my God, Dan Burnett is at it again, on Sunday at Pitcher & Piano, this time with his band. That starts at 8pm. Pitcher & Piano actually got in touch with a load of stuff they have there, I’ll stick it all in the listings proper, but here are the edited highlights (I’ve had to edit them down as otherwise this would just be a column talking about what’s on at the Pitcher and Piano, when I’ve not even mentioned what I’m up to yet which is, frankly, bothering me). They have a quiz night there on Wednesdays from 8pm. This is one of them modern quizzes where you need a smartphone to download the app. As a man who is confused by things like Calculators and thinks Camera’s steal your soul, I have no idea what a smart phone is. The Devils instrument no doubt. Still it’s free for new teams or £1.50 Per person otherwise and kicks off at 8pm. Also there they’ve got some drinks offers on, like on Tuesday it’s called Re:Session (I wish I had thought of that name) which is a cheap drinks night all night, and on Thursdays it’s 2 for 1 on all cocktails all night. I don’t like cocktails however but I did have a right good pint of something last time I was in there. Unfortunately I can’t remember what it was, so will probably have to forgo my usual truck of the stuff arriving at my house for some well pointed product placement.*
*Please note, this has never happened. Daffyd at Daleside Brewery once promised me a pint of Daleside Blonde after I mentioned how much I liked it 3 weeks in a row, but I’m assuming the postman drank it. The get.
Anyway, now it’s time for me to talk about a new night I’m starting, really over sell it and talk it up at uncomfortable length (and hey ladies, that’s not the only thing of mine that is an uncomfortable length) (actually, I can’t back up that claim, yes it is). Tonight I’m starting a Quiz night at Lure Bar. Like, hundreds of years ago, I used to do a quiz night at Jimmys and rather than going to the effort of coming up with a new type of night (seriously, you have to do loads… come up with a name and choose what t-shirt you are going to wear, good grief, who’s got time for all that?) I just decided to rehash that concept. It will be more of a “fun” quiz than something serious, with fairly easy questions and some stupid rounds that seem funny to me now but will probably be uncomfortable to do. So anyway, you can come down and either enjoy what will be a thoroughly entertaining quiz, that is as well presented as it is well thought out, where you may even learn something; or come down and watch me fall spectacularly on my arse as I realize I’m not young and edgy enough to be doing this kind of thing anymore. It’s called “Quizzle ma nizzle” and runs from 8pm and will finish at 10pm, after which I will do some bad DJ’ing as you rush for the doors saying things like “you call this music?”. And it’s every week, until I come up with a better idea.
Tim Paul is running his, much better named than mine, “Far too early for Christmas” Quiz at the Empress on the Stray this Friday. Speaking of The Empress, the owners have opened up a coffee shop at the “High Harrogate” end of St. Are-in-the-Beck and it’s called Berties. They do a mean latte and have their official opening thing there this Saturday. I mean, it’s been open for a few weeks now, obviously, I’ve had like 7 latte’s there, but they are “launching” it this weekend. I’ve no idea what they have planned but they run a good pub at the Empress so I suspect they will do well there also.
I should point out that I am Dj’ing at The Den on Saturdays throughout December. The reason for this is two fold, as A) I was meant to be doing some posters to advertise this, but got caught up in the whole “Staying in bed and not bothering” craze that is sweeping Britain; and 2) because Jen the boss gets annoyed when I don’t plug her. Plug the night’s that are on there I mean. I suppose a third reason might be that you’d like to come down and listen to me do some dj’ing, but that’s about as likely as Jen letting me plug her isn’t it?

Thanks for reading, drink responsibly and don’t be loose with your affections.
