Dj Trev’s guide to things to do when avoiding the cold November rain

28 November 2013

Culture

Spa Town Roller Derby Team, the sporting mascots of this page, are running an interesting night this Friday at High Harrogate Working Mens Club.

Initially they’d asked me to compere it with DJ Pieman, but I think they were worried we were too lowbrow for it. Anyway, I’m in Leeds that night, but otherwise I would have loved to do it and had worked out some classy items for it: I would open with a poety reading to warm the crowd up, I was then going to drop some interpretative dance on them and perhaps close with a one man play about political oppression… but not to worry, since I’m unavailable instead you the night presented by the thinking man’s Dj Trev, Craig Gordon (from Death of the Sun) and Ash Diaz (from The Theatre, and to a lesser extent, America), who will between them add all the pomp and dignity required as they introduce a full evening of – wait for it – Spaghetti Wrestling. It kicks off at 7.30pm and also on the night there is live music from Set Sails (awesome music and super hot girl singer), Hell Fire Jack (awesome music and super hot guy singer) plus Little Drafts (awesome music and lovely personalities). I’m not sure if you are allowed to eat the spaghetti after the wrestling, I’m not sure that you’d want to, far be it from me to cast aspersions about your dietary foibles, but this looks like it will be a good laugh.

Other business

There is another full bill of music on Friday too, this being down at Knaresborough, where a night called “The Friday Mix” at Henshaws Arts Centre welcomes The Modern Day Dukes, Fold & Red Ocean Nectar. It’s a cool venue, I should know as I was there just before Hallowe’en for Frightfest. To be fair, you should know that too, only I never got round to actually writing my review about it as I have been busy with several major projects, including: Invent a new kind of crisp flavor (codename : Sockbutty) write the greatest book the world has ever seen (1 paragraph and counting) and doing the hoovering (estimated completion date Spring 2017). So for now you can either take my word that Henshaws is a good live venue (realistically, if you were reading a review by me you’d still be taking my word for it, for all you know, I never set foot outside of my front door except to get new jars in which to store urine) or check it out for yourself. Which would be better, and essentially the point of this page.

I’m sticking with Friday as there is a right load of stuff on, including perhaps the area’s coolest house night. This Friday, for fans of house music Knee Deep are celebrating their first birthday at Moko Lounge. For anyone left who’s not heard of this house night, it’s promoters have managed staggering things over their first year. Initially they started out playing the VIP lounge at Viper rooms but within a very short space of time built up such a following that the moved to their very own venue for their monthly Fridays. That’s pretty good going on its own, but in one year they have taken the night from a solid showcase of local talent, to being able to include some impressively big names in the house scene. Couple that with showcasing their brand by playing sets along side such legends as Pete Tong, these guys are fully living the dream. Darius Syrossian headlines the birthday party, with Luke Pompey (who is, if we’re honest, headline material himself) plus Dom Samba, James Moon, Sean Harris and Hutch & Mason. Congratulations to the Knee Deep boys who’ve done excellent work, if you’d like to congratulate them in person, you can get tickets to this on the Knee deep facebook page, www.facebook.com/groups/201522196660594

How’s this for a Juxtaposition, having just talked at length about a massively cool House night, I am going to talk about local community Christmas Fairs. Tis the season to hold a Christmas fair and this Friday has New Park School’s Fair. Now listen, when I say “Fair” this means that they will be selling cakes and hand made gifts and that, it is not a fair with shrunken heads in a jar and bearded ladies guessing your age, so be aware. However, on Saturday St. John’s Church Hall in Bilton holds one that looks like it will be slightly more alternative; probably still no bearded ladies, though it does look like the type of thing my ex would go to: specialist Vintage stalls, Wiccan “interest”, Recycled/upcycled (really, check these things out they are ace) and boutique type stalls. So that’s pretty cool as I guess if you can get to both you can probably do half your christmas shopping. If anyone is selling any star wars stuff you could get it and send it in to Harrogate-news.co.uk for your favourite weekly columnist? I presume Tim Cook likes Star Wars. Though he actually strikes me as more of a Hand made Preserves type person.

Lure Bar has re-opened! Or Has it? Yes it has. As I go to press, I might be playing there on Thursdays, but it’s not confirmed yet. I am concerned I’m going to have to send this in before we nail down the details, as this week is very busy for me, with 2 gigs to attend, some hoovering to finish, 3 definite dj gigs plus one gig that I’m kind of hanging around by the phone

for… Good news, they’ve just confirmed. The rest of this article would truly have been a maudlin affair if not, but as it is I start at Lure Bar tonight. This evening I’m just going to be dj’ing but from next week I’m going to be running a quiz show there, so I’ll give it the big over the top sell next week eh? Something for us all to look forward to.

In the meantime lets get back to covering one of the many hundreds of events on this Friday. In fact this next one is on every week. Dj Cloudbass got in touch with me last week (that’s right, my life consists of talking to people called things like “Cloudbass”, “Dj Cutmaster Fly”, “Ghosts of Venice” and “Lillet’s Ultra”) because I’d been negligent in one of my listings. Whilst you are recovering from the news that I’m not always 100% professional, I’ll rectify that right now. STILL on every week at Zoso Bar, on Fridays, is “Vibe” which is a House & Tech night. Regular Dj’s and pretty much all close personal showbiz friends of mine are: Cloudbass, Matt Da

Conga, Jonny Kendall, Greg M & Andy Wynter. I know you are thinking that Jonny Kendall and Andy Wynter are not really very exciting Dj/showbiz names but I know for a fact that those are pseudonyms because if you say Jonny One-eye and Andy Backhouse out loud or in text form whilst standing in front of a mirror you get a mystic curse that means you have to write 1000 “weekend previews” before anyone laughs at one. Still, those guys at least are good house Dj’s and Zoso is a nice little venue for something a bit underground and off the radar. Though I’m trying to put it back on the radar as I type.

Le’ts break from Fridays again, and mention every month on the first Wednesday the Mitre Pub in Knaresborough holds it’s Jazz Club. I’m not into Jazz remotely (apart from “Jazz Mags” but I did that joke last month) but I really like the Mitre, it’s a great pub and is worth a visit on it’s own.

DJTrev5

ve just never heard them Dj. If anyone at Moko wants to send me a VIP Booth invite with complimentary bottle of expensive champagne so I can come and listen to news.co.uk, or through my facebook blog which is facebook.com/djtrevuk).

Drop Out at Moko (which you may recall is what this paragraph was about before I forced my own link’s and plugs in there – and I’m not a man who likes to force a plug in anywhere, but I will squeeze in an unnecessary pun) has a guest Dj there this week too called Rickie D-H.

BACK TO Friday again, the lovely Christies Pub has live music with The Rob Donnelly Band plus MYSTERY SPECIAL GUESTS… Now, Sean “The Wolverine” McGrath Dj’s there and I’m slightly concerned that the “special guest” might be him dressed up like Martha Wash AND Izora Rhodes to perform “It’s raining men”. (Ok, I had to look up who the other Weather Girl was, but if you know THAT kind of thing you could probably do well at Sean’s pub quiz too, which is there on Thursdays.)

Blues Bar, has, as ever, live music all day on Sunday, with the Dan Burnette Blues Band (makes sense) in the Afternoon and DERRIN NAUENDORF in the evening.I don’t know who DERRIN NAUENDORF is, but he has, you have to admit, the kind of name you think deserves bloc capitals. They’ve got someone else with a brilliant name there on Tuesday too, George Breakfast. Honestly, I know nothing about these artists but come on, with names like that….

If you’ve been somewhat disappointed by this weeks column and lack of any “lol” worthy moments, The Regency Pub is holding a comedy improv night on Saturday, which is people who earn a living from doing comedy, so logically will be much better at it that me, as, as you may be aware, I try to earn a living by playing records. You can come and laugh at THAT on Sunday at rehab if you like. Though it’s not actually meant to be funny.

Finally, Dj Tim Paul is holding a “Far Too Early For Christmas Party” Party at The Harlow Inn this Saturday, which is a great name and I want to steal it. But I’m above such things.

Hope you find something in this week’s listings that appeals, don’t forget to tune in the same time next week for my “Far Too Early to call it the run up to Christmas Listings part 1” run up to Christmas Listings Part 1.
