Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly man was seriously injured in a road traffic collision on the A166 near York.
The man, aged 84, was driving his silver Ford Focus from the direction of Stamford Bridge towards York when his vehicle collided with a silver Ford Galaxy and a white Peugeot Partner van coming the opposite way, between Dunnington and Murton Lane, at around 10.35am on Monday 19 August 2013.
The man was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment, where he remains in a critical condition. His passenger an 80-year-old woman was also injured in the collision. She was taken to York District Hospital but was not seriously hurt in the incident.
A woman who was driving the Ford Galaxy was also taken to York District Hospital suffering from injuries to her leg, along with her young son, who sustained minor injuries in the collision.
Two people travelling in the Peugeot van, a man and woman, were also admitted to York Hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not life-threatening.
Officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Traffic Sergeant Julian Pearson, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said:
Unfortunately, a man was seriously injured in the collision and it is important that we investigate how the incident occurred.
I am appealing to anyone who saw an elderly couple travelling towards York in a silver Ford Focus prior to the collision occurring to get in touch with the police as soon as possible. You may have information vital to our enquiries.
I would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision itself.

The road was closed in both directions as officers investigate the collision. It reopened at 3:30pm
