Four dentists from the Beech House Dental Practice in Ripon are heading to the Philippines in July to use their skills
Alexandra Callaghan, Sabah Hussain, Rachel Adams and Richard Nichols are experienced dentists who have decided to use their holiday time to provide dental treatment with the Rise Above Foundation, a charity which supports disadvantaged communities in the Philippines.
Rise Above Foundation has worked as a voluntary organisation within Cebu City, Philippines since November 2000 striving to improve quality of life for the poor and underprivileged by means of providing health and hygiene programmes, educational opportunities and livelihood training programmes.
Their dental projects run every January and July and over the past 10 years they have provided dental care, at no cost to the local people, for tens of thousands of patients.
Alexandra, Sabah , Rachel and Richard will be providing a whole remit of dental procedures in the mobile clinics for the local people including fillings, cleaning, extractions and even the provision of false teeth.
Rachel who has volunteered alongside Sabah with the project twice before said “Rise Above Foundation is making an impact on the lives and futures of these impoverished people. Providing sustainable dental care is the long term aim of this charity who have recently invested in a permanent dental clinic for volunteers, after 10 years of mobile dental care provision.
With the support of dentists and financial donors throughout the world the local people are being freed from years of toothache. In the schools involved in the project, toothache has fallen from the first cause of absence to the fifth. Basic aesthetic dentistry is improving peoples’ appearance which increases the likelihood of finding employment. It is a pleasure to support them with our skills and time”.
If you would like to support the charity please donate at their website, riseabove-cebu.org, we will use any funds raised to buy materials, anaesthetics and instruments that will be used on the dental project. Together we can make a difference.
