10 students from Harrogate High School embarked upon Wimbledon to watch a day’s tennis with the PE department. But, they were in for a treat, a five set thriller in which Andy Murray fought from two sets down to beat Spain’s Fernando Verdasco by three sets to two.
In a pulsating match that took three and a half hours the students stayed until the end to cheer on their home favourite.
As the school obtained a full day quarter final ticket the students were also able to watch the Ferrer v Del Potro match which Del Potro won. Some of the afternoon was also spent by the students up on the Wimbledon hill, also known as ‘Murray Mount’ where the atmosphere was electric with student Aidan Lovett saying “had a great day at Wimbledon on the hill”.
Student Scott Newbould said:
Great experience, we were very fortunate to be able to go, loved every minute of it” with Jess Kirby adding her show of support Andy Murray “Was an amazing experience, would definitely go again, go Andy!
Head of PE Emma Lewis said:
This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to experience and well worth the long drive back to school.
Harrogate High School has submitted plans to build a state of the art tennis facility on site in association with Spa Tennis Club. This facility will hold indoor and outdoor tennis courts as well as room for ping-pong, changing rooms and extra parking space.
