Harrogate Thai Boxer wins British title

5 July 2013

Professional Thai Boxer Sarah Gibbs from the Kao Loi Gym at Hornbeam Park has won the International Thai Boxing Federations lightweight British Title with a stunning performance against Emma Thomas from the famous Master Toddy gym in Thailand.

Gibbs weighed in at 49kg on the day before the fight, and her opponent slightly lighter at 47.5kg, and although shorter Gibbs looked the stronger. However the Harrogate fighter didn’t take her opponent lightly saying, “I knew she had been training and fighting in Thailand and has stopped a few of her opponents with punches so I knew I would have to be at my best.”

On the day of the fight Gibbs confessed to being the most nervous she had ever been but was confident in her preparations.

Coach Pierre Mahon said:

You could see as she started to warm up she was completely in the zone.

As the bell sounded for the first round the fighters scored evenly with kicks and knees and it seemed that the fight would continue to be close. However going into the second Gibbs began to block effectively and started to land a thunderous overhand right which began to shake Thomas. Gibbs began to take control and at one point in the third round forced her opponent out of the ring and onto the judges table! Thomas resumed the fight but from the middle of the fourth round the outcome was as good as decided. The Bangkok fighter needed a stoppage however it was Gibbs who came the closest, hurting Thomas with a body punch close to the final bell.

Gibbs said:

I am so happy with my win and I can’t wait to fight again in front of my home crowd at the Pavilions in October.

I’d like to thank everyone at Kao Loi and all those who came to support me.
