NHS Careers is delighted to announce that two students from Ripon Grammar School in Ripon are the Yorkshire and Humber regional winners of its Step into the NHS national schools’ competition.

Annie Fry and Louisa Chatterton impressed the judges with their video advert and detailed PowerPoint presentation to promote the role of a forensic psychologist to their peer group. The video consisted of a role play scenario which demonstrated the type of work carried out by forensic psychologists in the NHS every day.

In its fifth year, the competition attracted 674 entries from up and down the country and more than 1660 students got involved. The competition aims to promote the 350 plus careers available in the NHS in England and students were tasked with designing an advertisement and job description for their chosen role. They could work individually or in groups of up to four.

Darren Aldrich from NHS Careers visited the school last week to present the students with their prize of a £50 Amazon voucher each.

Martin Pearman, head teacher of Ripon Grammar School, said:

We are thrilled that our students have won this important prize. This competition has proven to be a valuable classroom tool, engaging students with the workings of the health service and the different career options available to them. The hard work and effort invested in this project reflects their commitment and dedication.

Annie and Louisa added:

We enjoyed taking part in the competition and we are now more aware of the jobs available in the NHS. We looked at the role of a forensic psychologist as we wanted to learn more about what people do in this role and how they help people who have committed a crime, work in the NHS.

We have learnt a lot about the day-to-day work of a forensic psychologist and are seriously considering a job in the NHS when we finish school.
