A record three top Premier Gold Awards have been presented to show garden designers taking part in the 2013 Harrogate Spring Flower Show, which runs from 25 – 28 April.
Lizzie Tulip Garden Design, from York, (Rough with the smooth), British Association of Landscape Industries, Yorkshire and North East Region, (Vision of modern serenity), Craven College, Skipton, (Chill in out) all claimed top honours.
Among the four Gold Award winners were Leeds-based PWP Landscape Design, with custom joinery by BowCora, Wood Landscapes, from Bradford, Derby College and Craven College, from Skipton. The Peter D Sutcliffe Memorial Creative Award went to PWP Landscape Design.
Staged at the Great Yorkshire Showground, the 2013 spring show features 17 fantastic gardens, all offering ideas and inspiration for those planning the perfect outdoor space.
New developments of the popular show attraction include relocation to a central position on the showground and the introduction of two new categories, one for professional designers and one for community or college displays.
Each of the show gardens were judged for one of five awards – Premier Gold, Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver and Bronze.
Rated as Britain’s best gardening event by Which?Gardening, the show is also offering garden landscaping live, as the team representing the UK in the forthcoming World Skills Competition prepares for this summer’s international challenge.
Ewan Sewell, from Fangfoss, near York, and Matt Bradley, from Derry, Northern Ireland, have been chosen to take part in World Skills at Leipzig, Germany, in July. They will be building the UK competition garden for the very first time against the clock during the show. Level 2 landscaping students from Askham Bryan College, York, will also be showcasing their skills in a live garden build.

We have doubled the number of outdoor show gardens since they were launched to mark our centenary in 2011. This is in direct response to requests from our visitors, who told us they enjoy seeing the inspirational designs so much that they want to see more. We have a fantastic range of ideas for visitors to take home – the standard just keeps getting better!
We are also delighted to have World Skills UK here at the show. These young professionals represent the future of our industry and I am sure visitors will be intrigued to learn more about how a show garden is constructed and how much work is involved in creating these fantastic exhibits.
Harrogate Spring Flower Show will also feature displays from over 100 leading plant nurseries, plus the UK’s biggest display of flower arranging and floristry.
New for 2013 is the opportunity for visitors to roll up their sleeves and Have a Go at building a greenhouse from recycled plastic drinks bottles with the help of Groundwork. They will also be able to try their hand at Yorkshire dry stone walling with students from the Askham Bryan College Harrogate Centre.
Children’s activities include hands on fun in Gardening with Nature and a new primary school competition is being piloted for growing and showing a tub of salad. Youngsters from 18 schools across the region were invited to put their green fingers to the test by growing a tub of five salad varieties and creating a diary of what they learned along the way.

As the title suggest, texture is the starting point for this Yorkshire spring garden. Two pathways lead to an elevated seating area, while shrubs and woodland planting nestle in dappled shade, set against a backdrop of stone walling and yew hedging.
