It’ll soon be curtain up for the latest production by award winning Ripon Amateur Operatic Society.
This year’s show, “Follies”, was written by musical great Stephen Sondheim. It is a mesmerising show about a group of veteran showgirls who reunite one last time in the theatre they once performed in before its knocked down to make a car park. Their younger selves help tell the story of the past when the theatre and its inhabitants were in their prime.
Starring Elaine Paige in the Broadway Revival last year, the show includes Songs such as Broadway Baby and Losing my Mind.

A beautiful and gently humorous story is illustrated with Sondheim’s score, showgirls galore, fantastic dance routines and the bitter-sweet themes of love, regret and retrospect.
The Society needed a beautifully ornate theatre for their photo shoot and had to look no further than Harrogate Town centre and a well known Indian restaurant. Cardamom Black is housed in what famously used to be the Empire Theatre. The restaurant decor has remained sympathetic to the original interior of the theatre, and yet has an air of pure decadence making the restaurant the perfect backdrop for the Follies showgirls to enjoy.
To celebrate the new friendship between the restaurant and Ripon Operatics, the Society is giving away two tickets to the show, plus a pre or post show meal at Cardamom Black. All people need to do is enter the prize draw by opening http://eepurl.com/wz-zH or by visiting the website www.riponoperatics.org before 8th April.
Follies will be performed at Harrogate Theatre from 17th – 20th April 2013. Evening performances start at 7.30pm and there will be a Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm.
