Nursery children and parents experienced the beginnings of new life as they witnessed the birth of new chicks hatching into the welcoming environment of Western Primary School in Harrogate.

Foundation Stage 1 teacher Gemma Thomas said:

The children have loved waiting in anticipation for the eggs to hatch and have made some fantastic observations and paintings of them.

The pupils were incredibly gentle with the new chicks and enquired enthusiastically about the life and times of the birds as they go through life into adulthood. The experience stimulated the development of the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of the living world around them.

Arriving into the world at the school were four roosters and seven hens. The chicks are destined for life on the farm when they are re-housed at one of the teacher’s farms.

Gemma Thomas added:

It was lovely to see the children interacting with the chicks. It truly is bringing learning to life.
