Harrogate bar manager Peter Dobrontei is celebrating after taking third place in the International Habanosommelier final – the world championship for cigar waiters.
The competition – part of the annual Cigar Festival in Havana, Cuba – sees the world’s finest cigar waiters demonstrate their skills in the art of handling and matching habanos.
Peter, who works at Hotel du Vin, won the expenses-paid trip to compete in the international final after winning the coveted UK Habanosommelier award last October.
Tough judging determines entrants’ knowledge of the history and flavours of cigar brands as well as the best food, wine, and spirits to accompany each choice.
Peter said:
It was an honour to be crowned as the best in the UK but to have come third in the world is a dream come true. I was up against some of the finest sommeliers in the world so it’s great to come out on top.
