The name of the officer who tragically died while on duty on Saturday 5 January 2013 has now been released
He was PC Andrew Bramma, aged 32, who was a member of the Harrogate Safer Neighbourhood Team. He was tragically killed when his patrol van hit a tree in West Tanfield, near Ripon, while he was on the way to answer an emergency call.
Andrew leaves a wife and two young children.
Andrew had recently transferred to North Yorkshire from Greater Manchester Police, where he had served since 2008, and was a well-liked and much-valued member of the force.
His family are being supported by specially trained police officers at this extremely difficult time.
This is a truly sad day for North Yorkshire Police.
Andrew was a committed, enthusiastic officer who wanted to serve the public and the community.
My thoughts are with Andrew’s family and friends who have suffered the most tragic and devastating loss.
The overwhelming sense of sadness which had been felt by Andrew’s colleagues is shared by the entire force as we mourn the loss of one of our officers.
All flags at North Yorkshire police stations are being flown at half-mast as a mark of respect to Andrew.
Mike Stubbs, of North Yorkshire Police Federation said:
Today we are mourning a member of our police family, who was killed making his way to an incident to help a member of the public.
Andrew had quickly established himself as a well-liked and respected officer amongst his colleagues in North Yorkshire who are distraught at his death.
Most tragically, he leaves behind a young family who are devastated by last night’s events.
We are working very closely with the chief officer team to support them.
This is the worst news a family can receive and my sympathies and thoughts are with them all at this dreadful time.
We urgently need to find out what happened and in due course to make sure that any lessons are learnt – I am reassured that the force is taking the necessary steps to do so.
However, right now my focus is to ensure that North Yorkshire Police has all it needs to provide full support to the officer’s family and colleagues at this tragic time.
An online condolence book has been opened for people wishing to share their memories of Andrew and express their sympathy.
Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw a police van travelling between Ripon police station and the scene of the incident, to contact them with information on 101.
