Emergency services were called to Pannal railway station, near Harrogate this morning (23 November 2012) following reports of person on the line.
The 08:55 service from Knaresborough to Harrogate, which passes at speed through Pannal without stopping, this morning struck a 17 year old girl. The train was brought to a stand near to Bunker Hill and the emergency services called and attended the scene.
The Police have confirmed that the girl died during the incident.
Next of kin have been informed.
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said:
BTP officers were called to Pannal railway station in Harrogate today, Friday, 23 November following reports of a female being struck by a train.
Officers from BTP and North Yorkshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 09.18am, and is not being treated as suspicious.
Officers are currently working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, formally identify the deceased, who is believed to be a 17- year –old female from Harrogate, and inform her next of kin. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.
The lines were handed back to Network Rail at 10.46
