Harrogate Town 1 – 0 Hyde

1 November 2012

A goal deep into extra time earned Harrogate a Saturday trip to Torquay United.

Due to the late arrival of the Hyde coach the game did not get underway until 8 pm.

The match was played at Harrogate Railway Athletic, due to a flooded pitch at Harrogate Town. Town gave their thanks to them for their welcome assistance.

An even first half saw the visitors play the more incisive football, but Town’s defence, led by the dominant skipper Alan White held firm.

Hyde’s Ryan Crowther had a shot deflected for a corner and Spencer and Lomax shot wide.Town hit back with Paul Beesley heading an Adam Bolder free kick at David Carnell and the Hyde defence was luck to survive a goalmouth scamble after a Dave Merris corner.

White and Hyde’s Alex Brown found their way into the referee’s notebook, the latter for an outrageous dive which would have graced the Olympics.

Crowther found himself in the thick of the action, firstly slicing well wide and then blocking a vicious shot from his own player Liam Tomsett.

But it was Town who finished the half in the ascendancy with Bolder’s cross shot just creeping wide.

The opening seconds after the break saw Danny Forrest run on to a through ball and lob into the net only to be denied by an offside flag.

Both sides had chances to win in a pulsating second half.

Adam Nowakowski threatened with a lob to the far post and then forced Brown into a desperate clearance from his header across goal.

The strong running Dan Clayton replaced Chib Chilaka and immediately caused panic in the visiting defence with a strong attack, before almost scoring when he hit a Nowakowski flick on,from a White free kick over the bar.

It wasn’t all one way traffic and Craig McGillivray had to deal with shots from Adam Griffin and Lomax, before Beesley headed Bolder’s centre wide and the game went into extra time.

The first period saw Hyde survive an early Town free kick, while Bolder shot just wide from a Merris pass and Forrest shot at Carnell from sub Jonny Allan’s cross.

Hyde’s Phil Jevons opened the second half with shot that flashed inches wide, but just when it seemed penalties were inevitable, Town struck.

Dan Clayton picked up the ball on the right, ghosted past two players and then unleashed a looping drive into the top corner to send Town into the First Round Proper and another visit to Torquay.
