Guiseley 2 – 0 Harrogate Town

19 September 2012

A Guiseley goal in each half ensured that Town left Nethermoor empty handed.

Town battled from the off, and a tasty tackle by Luke Dean on Andy Holdsworth earned Mark Bower a free kick, which James Walshaw headed over the top.

Town matched Guiseley territorially, but tended to over elaborate in front of goal making it easy for the strong home defence to clear.

Guiseley had a 20th minute penalty claim waved away by Referee Holmes and from the Town break Dwayne Samuels elected to pass when presented with a clear shooting chance.

A minute later, Chib Chilaka was fouled and Steve Drench was forced to punch Dave Merris’s dangerous free kick clear.

The home sides movement off the ball was causing the Town defence problems and on 29 minutes they took the lead.

James Walshaw broke down the left and drove a rising cross shot past Jose Veiga.

This sparked a strong Town reaction, with a Merris free kick prompting a bout of head tennis in the home defence and Drench parrying a vicious Samuels drive for a corner.

Half time approached with Rhys Meynell bringing the home support to their feet with a 25 yard drive that flashed inches wide and Leon Osborne squaring across the home goal only for Guiseley to scramble clear.

At the break,Adam Nowakowski replaced Lee Elam and 10 minutes later, Osborne was subbed by Alex Meechan.

This gave Town more creativity and on the hour a fine run by Samuels was only halted by a foul.

From Merris’s resulting free kick, Adam Bolder’s shot was blocked by the wall.

A Chilaka header hit the bar and in the following melee, Town thought that they had forced the ball over the line, only to be denied by the linesman.

However, on 63 minutes the unmarked Mark Bower lashed home from close range, after Simon Ainge had chested a corner into his path.

Town dominated the closing stages, as Guiseley took their foot of the gas. Chilaka headed a Meechan centre over the bar and Nowakowski shot wide.

Unfortunately, deep into stoppage time, Jose Veiga sustained a head injury, while bravely blocking from sub Josh Wilson.

After lengthy treatment from both physios, he was stretchered off suffering concussion and a badly swollen left eye, which will preclude him from Saturday’s cup tie at West Auckland.
