North Yorkshire Firefighters attend fundraising events in USA

30 August 2012

Two UK firefighters employed by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be attending two fundraising events on the evenings of 13th September at the Battery Park Restaurant New York and a similar event on the 14th September at The Mansion on O Street in Washington DC. Both events will start at 7:00pm until 9:00pm, for further details contact justinrowe@sky.com

The aim of the events is to raise donations for the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation and raise the profile of a world record attempt endurance run taking place during September 2013.

Watch Manager Justin Rowe, firefighter Terrance Gregg, Station Manager Andy Blades and Station Manager Mark Naylor from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will attempt to run to all the fire houses in the five boroughs of New York City, to honour the 343 NYFD firefighters, Police Officers and First Responders who lost their lives during 9/11.

The run should take seven days to complete, they will then lay a wreath at Ground Zero on behalf of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. The team will then finally take part in the annual Tunnel To Towers Run/Walk that retraces the steps of Brooklyn firefighter Stephen Siller who came back on duty during that fateful day. Stephen, unable to travel further in his truck, grabbed his equipment and ran 5kms to the Twin Towers to join his colleagues from Squad 1 to help out in the rescue effort; sadly Stephen lost his life along with his colleagues.

All money raised during the fundraising events and during the “2013 New York City Fire House Run” Will go to The Stephen Siller Tunnel To Tower Foundation and The Fire Fighters Charity in the UK.

WM Justin Rowe said:

I would like to say a big thank you to Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Jason Goldberg, Lauren Macon & Taylor Pochekailo for organising both events, Sweatshop Running UK and Tony Navarino, Events and Planning Officer at the Tunnel To Tower Foundation, for his continual support.
