Ring the bells in Harrogate for the Olympics

26 July 2012

On Friday 27 July at 08:12, a group of people will be gathering by the War Memorial to join in the national “All the Bells” initiative to ring in The Olympics.

This three minute peal of bells, from church bells to wind chimes and hand bells to cycle bells is part of a work by Turner Prize-winning artist and musician Martin Creed. It has been commissioned by the London 2012 Festival and will performed by anyone and everyone who wishes to take part.

Local Harrogate resident, Graham Richards, has invited people from the town to join with him by theWar Memorial opposite Betty’s at 08:00 to start ringing as quickly and loudly as possible at 08:12 for the three minute duration. They will be joined by the bells of St Peter’s Church just across the road.

Graham Richards said:

This is an event for anyone of any age. As long as you have something to ring, bring it along, even if it’s bolted onto your bicycle!” we’ve seen the response from the people of Harrogate to the Olympic Flame coming through the town, now we can welcome the Games themselves, by joining in with this unique national initiative! All you need to do is simply turn up at 08:00, to be ready to start.
