8,000 school children expected to line the Stray for the Olympic torch

torchFurther details of the Olympic Torch procession have been published.

Knaresborough Programme 

Knaresborough High Street will be closed to traffic between 12 noon and 3.00pm.

From 12.00 noon a variety of street performers will entertain the crowds prior to the torch arriving in this area. This includes Morris dancers, the Silver Band and a display of decorated beds from the previous week’s bed race.

On the corner of Forest Lane and Knaresborough Road students from Henshaws’ College will congregate to watch the relay.

Children from local schools will be lining the road (on the left hand side) between Forest Lane and the bottom of Belmont Park. Starbeck Primary School will line the route on the other side of the road directly outside their school.

After the relay has passed (at about 2.15pm) activities will take place on Belmont Park including bouncy castles, mini-roundabouts and a hog roast until 5.00pm.

Barnardo’s will be serving refreshments in the area in front of their restaurant (Dr B’s) on Knaresborough Road.

 

Harrogate Programme

All the schools in the Harrogate cluster have been invited to the Stray to watch the relay. The have divided the Stray has been divided  into 4 areas as follows:-

Stray 1 – section between Wetherby Road and Oatlands Drive.

Stray 2 – section between Oatlands Drive and Stray Rein.

Stray 3 – section between the railway line and Leeds Road.

Stray 4 – the area known as West Park Stray

In excess of 8,000 children are expected to line the Stray.

Entertainment includes:

Rossett School Samba Band

Circus of the Absurd

Harrogate Hornets’ Cheerleading Club

Harrogate Shotokan Karate Club

Lynton Academy of Dance

On Monday, 18 June, the council’s Parks Team will be mowing Olympic rings on Christ Church Stray – this has been given permission by the London Organising Committee and is known as a “spectacular”).

In front of the War Memorial there will be a colour guard with around 40 representatives from Menwith Hill and the Army Apprentices College.

Opposite the Cenotaph is a small VIP area. VIPs include the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate (Cllr Robert Windass) and the MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough (Andrew Jones). A local choir ‘Rock up and Sing’ will be performing in this area.

As the torch goes down Parliament Street past the Turkish Baths, ticker tape will be released.

In front of the Royal Hall there will be a short ‘Olympics’ drama performance performed by the Harrogate Youth Theatre.

When the relay comes to an end in Harrogate (Duchy Road) there will be schools congregating in this area including Harrogate Ladies College and Brackenfield. Harrogate Ladies College have been working on a display for this area.

The torch will travel from here to Ripon in vehicle convoy.

 

Ripon – Programme

Events will be taking place on the Market Square from 12 noon until 3.00pm.

These include a mini decathlon, stalls, a hog roast and music. After 3.00pm the area will be cleared to allow for spectators to watch the torch.

There will be a BBQ on the Deer Park adjacent to the Cathedral.

Children and their parents/carers are being encouraged to attend Mallorie Park from 3.00pm where refreshments will be on sale the Cheeky Monkeys will be performing prior to the relay passing at 4.15pm.

At 4.30pm VIPs will congregate in front of the Cathedral as the torch passes.
