Students from a North Yorkshire college have teamed up with one of the region’s top hairdressers to learn more about the profession they want to join.
When course leaders at Harrogate College wanted students to hear first-hand about running a business as part of their NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing course, they called on Joseph Ferraro, joint owner of Halo Hair and Beauty in the town, to help.
He invited the Harrogate College students into his salon, in Leeds Road, Harrogate, and took time out to speak to them about the industry, and the enjoyment of running your own business, as well as the challenges. He hopes to link up with the college again to run future seminars.
Joseph, twice a finalist in the North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year competition, said he was keen to give back to an industry that he loves – and help inspire a future generation of young hairdressers.
Maxine Stevenson, curriculum leader for Hair, Beauty and Hospitality at Harrogate College, said the students had left Halo Hair and Beauty inspired by Joseph and his team of stylists.
Maxine Stevenson said:
Any opportunity for the students to get out of college and visit real salons is great, and they came back full of enthusiasm after their visit to Halo and talking to Joseph.
Halo Hair and Beauty has a very strong brand and is widely recognised in the area as being one of the top salons.
I know this position has come about through a lot of hard work. Joseph is very busy so we really appreciate the time he took out of his schedule to talk to our students.
Joseph, who regularly styles at London Fashion Week, said:
Hairdressing is a profession that I love and am passionate about and I am keen to inspire others and show young people starting out in the business what they can achieve through lots of hard work and dedication.
The students were all very keen to hear about both the upsides, and downsides, of running your own business, and I very much enjoyed having them in the salon. “I hope to be able to work closely with the college again in the future,” said Joseph.
Halo Hair and Beauty, which now boasts a team of 14 staff, opened in the town five years ago, but moved to its new premises, in Leeds Road, six months ago.
