In celebration of the centenary year of the North of England Horticultural Society this year’s spring show brings many new features and highlights for all to enjoy.
Gardening with Nature
At the show for the first time, this exciting and informative new feature includes displays and competitions from wildlife, environmental and horticultural charities and groups. All of which are encouraging visitors to create wildlife havens within their own garden.
Follow the garden path to the ‘Optic Nerve’, the sustainable garden created by students from Harrogate College. This garden is built entirely from recycled materials and encourages visitors to dig for worms, plant sunflowers and learn about composting.
Show Gardens
Outside show gardens are at the show for the first time this year. These gardens have a theme of sustainability and an influence of Highgrove to reflect the show’s patron HRH The Prince of Wales. There will be eight gardens taking part, 4 from horticultural colleges and 4 from professional garden designers and landscapers. All of these gardens are competing for the top awards and the chance to win the ‘People’s Choice’ award, voted for by visitors at the show.
‘A Postcard from Harrogate’
Harrogate Council have created ‘A postcard from Harrogate’ to be enjoyed at the show. Visitors are invited to relax on the garden bench and gaze though the frame to enjoy the magic of Harrogate. After the show this garden will be moved to a park within the town.
Rebekah’s Vegetables
Rebekah’s Vegetables are at the show for the first time this year. This company has been grown by the doting grandparents of a young girl who is allergic to many of the additives and preservatives in today’s foods. Growing their own organic fruit, vegetables and salads was the best way of knowing what their granddaughter was eating, as well as being the healthier option. The results were so successful Rebekah’s Seeds the company was formed and their incredible produce is on display at the show.
Narcissus ‘Harrogate Centenary’
To honour the centenary year of the North of England Horticultural Society the Narcissus ‘Harrogate Centenary’ 2Y-O has been grown and officially registered by Rae Beckwith, from Rae Beckwith Daffodils. This daffodil is now in flower and on display at the show.
Innovative Display
The theme for this show is ‘Century of Change’. 14 of the exhibitors have risen to the challenge to create a display based on the past 100 years and the impact on the industry.
Further celebrations to mark the centenary year will be happening throughout the show including floral art displays, growing demonstrations, chef’s cooking up delights in the cookery theatre, a celebratory marching band and hospitality within the President’s Pavilion.
