The 46th annual Great Knaresborough Bed Race is to be run on Saturday 11th June 2011, taking the theme ‘British History’.
Entries are welcomed in January and February with the last date for entries 28th February 2011.
The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is an annual community event run entirely by volunteers made world famous by its riot of colour and pageantry, the courage and endurance of its teams, and the glorious eccentricity of its entrants.
See www.knaresborough.co.uk/bedrace/entryform.htm for an entry form.
For many years TV coverage has boosted this with the BBC’s Songs of Praise programme choosing Bed Race 2010 as the theme of its broadcast on 11 July. Nippon TV, Transworld Sport and others aired fragments of the fancy dress parade and grueling race. In past years, Blue Peter, Channel Four and many others have featured the race, sparking coverage right around the world.
A bumper day is keenly anticipated for 2011 with thousands of spectators turning out to watch what is expected to a full race card of 90 teams of six runners and one passenger. And it is all for the best of charitable and community causes.
It is estimated that in recent years the total raised for this volunteer event will exceed £80,000.
Roads will be closed in Knaresborough and a special park-n-ride service will again operate for visitors to the Town.
