A Killinghall strategic investment specialist has joined a boutique discretionary portfolio management business headed by a near neighbour from Burnt Yates.
John Thornber – previously Head of Research at Border Asset Management and Investment Strategist at Sanlam – has joined the team at Andrews Gwynne LLP, co-led by Douglas Croft.
The firm, which was formed in the late 1970s, is a nationally-respected boutique private wealth manager, providing a highly bespoke discretionary investment management service, combined with independent financial advice.
The company’s clients, who are located all over the UK, include members of the legal and medical profession, broadcasters, captains of industry, accountants and senior financial professionals.
Mr Croft said: I’ve known of John and his capabilities for many years. He is highly-regarded in our industry and I’m confident he will be a strong asset to Andrews Gwynne.
With him now bringing his wealth of experience on-board we will be able to strengthen our core business – which is providing a highly personalised, largely discretionary, service to private clients, their trusts and pension funds, and, in particular, expanding our work on behalf of charities.
Unlike some of our competitors, who treat any portfolio under a range of £500k to £2m as a simple model, we provide tailored individual solutions to those with smaller portfolios and find increasing business among professionals with growing SIPP portfolios, which they may need managing for another ten or 20 years, or perhaps longer under the new pension rules. We believe our approach is amply justified as we continue to receive referrals from our existing clients and their professional advisers.
John said: I’m delighted to be joining a business that is highly regarded and, over the years, has built a solid reputation for providing intelligent, bespoke investment solutions to its clients, regardless of their wealth.
Andrews Gwynne has the freedom and independence to provide ‘whole of market’ solutions, combined with more than three decades of experience across assets in a way that few smaller houses have.
The goal is to keep providing the levels of service and returns comparable to the high end investment boutiques and private offices of London’s West End for the ordinary investor and our professional partners.
Mr Thornber – who is also the former Front Office Manager at multi-award winning stockbrokers Pilling & Co – was responsible for economic analysis, investment selection and asset allocation at Border, warning of the risks of financial crises in 2007/08, reducing portfolio risk before investing into the recovery.
